    RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT:

     

    Dr. Westermann provides multi-disciplinary team leadership to investigate the complex soil and plant nutritional management problems of irrigated crops (ARS National Programs 201, 202 and 206).  He conducts research on the relationships between management practices, soil-water and animal waste biological, chemical, and physical processes, plant nutrient concentrations and uptake, gaseous emissions, and physiological plant growth responses of irrigated field crops. Attention is focused on plant nutrient availabilities under various climatic and physiological stresses, and different soil-crop-water and animal waste management practices; the uptake and partitioning of nutrients in crops at different physiological growth stages; and the effects of soil-water-plant-animal management practices on sustainability, and air and water quality parameters.

     

    CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:

     

    Evaluating the effect of selected conservation practices on selected water quality parameters in irrigation return flows in the Upper Snake-Rock Hydrologic Unit. (Cooperators: Nelson and Bjorneberg)

     

    Evaluating selected methods (FTIR) to measure ammonia emissions from land applications of animal wastes. (Cooperators: Leytem and Bjorneberg, and Griffiths, UI)

     

    Evaluating wheys effect on plant nutrient availabilities. (Cooperators: Leytem and Roper, MVP)

     

    Characterizing the dynamics of phosphorus transport and transfer under surface irrigation. (Cooperators: Bjorneberg and ARS, Phoenix)

     

    Determining the phosphorus dynamics in irrigation laterals. (Cooperator: Nelson)
